Set this up on a new desk at home and the driverless claim held: Windows and the Mac both got two 4K displays, sound and the wired port with nothing installed and no restart. The power delivery is where I would push back. Eighty-five watts is plenty for a MacBook Air or a slim ThinkPad, but my sixteen-inch machine draws more than that whenever the fans spin up, so on a heavy afternoon the battery slowly drains while it is plugged into the dock. It catches up overnight and it has never got down to a warning, but if you have a bigger laptop go and check what its own charger is rated at before you buy this one.

The word driverless in the name is not marketing, it is the whole product. Plugged it into a locked-down work Dell that will not let me install anything and both screens came up before IT could say no!

Ours sit on hot desks in an open office, which means anyone can walk up with any laptop and get two screens and the wired network. Nine months in, across eleven desks, we have had exactly one that needed a power cycle. The lock slot matters more than you would think in a building with a lot of visitors.

We bought four of these for a shared studio where nobody has the same machine twice in the same week. MacBooks, ThinkPads, a Framework, an old Surface, and every one of them has come up with both screens and the network without anybody installing a thing. That is the entire reason they were chosen over the cheaper DisplayLink ones, and it has held. Not the smallest dock on a desk, but it hides behind a monitor stand well enough.

Port selection is the best I have found at this money: two video outs that work simultaneously, gigabit ethernet, a proper 3.5mm jack that does not hiss, and enough USB-A for a keyboard, mouse and a printer that refuses to die. The fixed host lead is the sore point. It is about thirty centimetres, which assumes the dock sits directly beside the laptop. Mine wants to live behind the monitor with the cables hidden, and it simply cannot reach, so there is a length of black cable looping across the desk that spoils the tidy-up the dock was bought for. Six months in that still annoys me every time I look at it, and it is the only thing keeping this off five stars.
