The thirty-two core part is the whole point and it behaves exactly as you would hope: a build that pinned every thread on the old box for fifty minutes now takes nine, and the machine sounds no different at minute nine than it did at minute one. What surprised me is the acoustics. Two of us sit either side of it and at full load it is a low even rush, not the rising and falling whine that made the last workstation unbearable in a shared room. Somebody spent real effort on the fan curve. Memory has been the other quiet win. Nothing has touched the swap file since the day it arrived, which after years of watching a progress bar crawl is a strange thing to get used to!
Used for: 6–12 months
Utterly steady under a long solve
It is far too heavy for one person to shift
Long solves run flat out and it never once loses its footing
Used for: 6–12 months
A fifty minute build is now nine
Wants a proper power circuit of its own
Nine minutes for a build that used to take fifty
Used for: 6–12 months
Does the work of two machines and is quieter than either
It went in to replace two machines that were being run in parallel to get overnight jobs done, and it does both their workloads at once in less time than either used to take alone. Eight months in, nothing has crashed, nothing has thermally backed off, and the studio noise floor has actually gone down because there is one box instead of two!
Used for: 1–3 months
Slotted into a rack room, wiped and imaged the way we do every machine, and it has held a full thermal load every working day since. The bays and slots are all reachable from the front, which for a machine this size is not a given, though you need real clearance behind it for the cables.
Used for: 3–6 months
Never slows down whatever you give it
The front panel flap gets in the way
Fast and unflappable, but the front panel flap is a poor design
Used for: 1–3 months
The old machine used to be a bottleneck you planned meetings around. This one has removed the planning: jobs go on, jobs come back, and nobody watches a progress bar any more!
