Specified for large point-cloud work and it does the job it was bought for without drama. Scenes that used to be split into four pieces now open whole, and the difference that makes to a working day is hard to overstate. The one gripe is the drive that came in it. A terabyte on a machine with this much memory is an odd pairing — a single scan set can be a fifth of it — so the first job was adding storage before it could earn its keep. The bays are there and the caddies are tool-free, so it was twenty minutes rather than an afternoon!

Three stars is a compromise between what it does and what it took to get there. On raw throughput it is exactly what was promised: a scene that took the old box most of a night comes back in under two hours, every time, and it holds that pace for as long as you keep feeding it. Against that, our application's certified driver list did not include what shipped in it, and the version that is certified had to be hunted down and pinned in place before anything would run reliably. Two of us lost the better part of a week to that. A machine sold on certification ought to arrive certified.

Five stars for the machine and a warning about where it lives. It is a big, heavy, deep box and the cable side needs real clearance, so if you were planning to slide it into a desk cubby, measure twice. Ours had to go on the floor in the end, where the front filter now collects studio dust at a remarkable rate and wants doing every month.
