Four stars for now, and the missing one is entirely about what it took to get going. No operating system, which I knew about, but I had not thought through what that means when the machine also wants the graphics drivers, the licence server client and the whole plugin set before it can do a single useful thing. There went a working day. Once it was up, no complaints at all. It is quicker than the machine it replaced by a margin I honestly did not expect at this end of the market, and it is quieter while it does it.

Freelance, so a broken machine means nobody is earning, and that is the whole calculation. I could have built something faster for the money. I could not have bought myself an engineer standing at the desk the next morning. Early days yet. It arrived, it went under the desk, it has done everything asked of it, and the only real surprise was how heavy the box was coming up the stairs.

Noise was the whole reason we did not build our own. There are four of us in one room and somebody is always on a call, so a machine that winds up every time a render starts was never going to work. This one holds a low steady note under load and nothing above it. Nine months of daily use and it has not once made anybody stop talking!

The first scene I put on it was one I knew the timings of by heart, because the old machine had ground through it a hundred times. Two hours became a bit over twenty minutes and I sat there watching the progress bar like a lunatic! Still inside the first fortnight so I cannot speak for the long haul, but nothing about the way it is built suggests it will be anything other than dull and reliable.

Ordered as the first of what will probably be six, so this one has had rather more scrutiny than it deserves. The useful things to know. It is heavy, and if it is going anywhere other than the ground floor, plan for two people. It comes bare, so the opening job is an image, and ours took an afternoon including the application stack. The inside is genuinely tool-free for anything you are likely to touch, which matters when you are doing it repeatedly. Two bays were already populated on arrival and the empty ones take a caddy without any argument. On the work itself it is early, but the test was a model that used to take the best part of an hour to open and now takes under a minute. That is the number the finance director understood. The rest of the rollout was signed off on the strength of it.
