Reception desk of a dental practice, on from half seven every morning, and the patients comment on it because it does not look like a computer. Two years in and the only thing we have done to it is wipe the screen. The touch layer gets a lot of use for signing forms, and it has not gone patchy in the corners the way the tablet it replaced did!

This replaced a laptop on a stand, a dock, a monitor and the four leads that went with them, on a desk in a spare bedroom that doubles as a guest room. As a monitor it is better than the one it replaced, which I had not expected — bigger, and the matt finish means the window behind me stops being a problem in the afternoon. As a computer it is quick enough that I have never thought about it, which is the highest praise I have. The speakers are fine for a call and thin for music. The mark against it is the depth of the stand. On a shallow bedroom desk it pushes the screen closer to your face than you want, and the answer is a wall bracket, which in a rented flat is not really an answer

Two stars, and the machine is only half the reason. It is quick, the screen is lovely and the touch layer works exactly as it should. What I did not understand when I ordered was how little of it is mine to change. Memory soldered, one drive, no second slot, and the only way to add anything is a box hanging off a USB port, which rather defeats the tidy desk I bought it for. Four months in I am already up against the memory, and the answer is apparently a whole new computer. That is not a specification, it is a subscription.

It runs the diary and the card machine in a small hair salon, so it is on from half seven in the morning until six, most days of the week, in a room that gets warm anyway. Three years in, the fan has only ever been audible on the hottest afternoon of the year, and the back of it is warm rather than hot. The thing that catches people out is the height: it does not go up and down the way a monitor arm does, so if you are tall you will be looking down at it, and there is no fixing that short of a bracket.

We put four of these into a training room where the old machines were towers on the floor that got kicked, unplugged and filled with dust. Two years on there has not been a single fault between them. The camera and microphone are good enough that we run remote sessions off them with nothing plugged in, which was never true of the old setup and its clip-on webcam. The one caveat is the obvious one: if the screen ever fails, the computer fails with it, so we bought a spare machine rather than spare parts

Bought for my mother-in-law, who wanted a computer and did not want a computer, if that makes any sense. No box, no cable spaghetti, nothing to plug into anything else. The touchscreen turned out to be the whole reason it works for her: she has never got on with a mouse, and she taps at it like a big phone, which is exactly what she wanted and nothing like what I would have chosen for myself. The camera is good enough that we do a video call every Sunday without her touching a single setting!

Bought for a home office in what is really a box room, where a tower and a monitor had stopped fitting. On that count it is a triumph: the desk is a desk again and there is one cable behind it. The honest report on the touchscreen is that I use it maybe twice in a working day, both times to scroll something while holding a mug, and I would not pay extra for it again. Reaching forward to a screen at monitor distance is uncomfortable in a way that reaching for a tablet on the desk is not. Four stars rather than five only because of that. Everything else about it has been quietly correct.
