The factory overclock on the pricier model is worth a couple of per cent and it costs a lot more than that, so this is the one to get. It has run 4K at high settings for a long time now without any drop in clocks over a session, which is what the oversized cooler buys you. Core temperature settles at 66C with the hotspot eleven degrees above, and the fans do not spin at all below 50C. The only real caution is physical. It occupies three slots, it is heavy, and the bracket is not optional unless you like the look of a sagging card.

What has impressed me most is that nothing has changed. It runs the same clocks at the same temperatures as it did on the first day two years ago, with no degradation in the cooler and no dust problem that a can of air has not fixed. 16GB has covered everything at 4K so far. Drivers have been stable across every release. For a card at this price that is exactly what you want to hear!

For most of the time I have had it this has been a superb card, and the whine is the one thing that has changed. It was silent to begin with. Somewhere around the six month mark a buzz appeared at high frame rates, and it has become steadily more noticeable since, to the point where a menu screen running unlocked is clearly audible from the sofa. Capping frames helps, and I now run a 141fps limit permanently for that reason alone. Everything else has been excellent. The core sits at 65C under load, the fans are quiet, 16GB has been plenty at 4K, and it has never crashed. Four stars, with the missing one entirely down to a noise that was not there at the start.

Neither the performance nor the thermals are in question here, so this rating is about one specific noise. There is a rattle from the middle fan in a narrow band of speeds, roughly a thousand rpm, that sounds like something loose rather than air. Above and below that range it is clean. In practice that means it is quiet under a heavy load and irritating during light work, which is exactly backwards. Setting an aggressive curve so the fans jump straight past the band works, at the cost of a card that is louder than it should be at idle. Everything else is five star. 4K is effortless, the core holds 64C, and 16GB has been ample. Two weeks of that and the rattle has not settled in the slightest. Three stars for a noise I should not have to design a fan curve around.
