Closed-back and still spacious, which is the trick Fostex have been pulling for years. Works straight out of a phone with a USB-C dongle, no amp required, and that alone separates it from most of the shelf at this price. The walnut cups have picked up a warmth in the colour that was not there when I unpacked them.

A year in and the thing that gets used most is not the sound but the fact that these can be worn in a shared office without anyone noticing I have them on. Leakage at normal volume is close to nothing. The wood cups mean they are warmer against the head than a plastic pair, which is lovely in February and less so in July!

Two things sold these over the obvious Japanese rivals: the closed cups and the 25 ohm load, which means a laptop drives them properly and no DAC is needed on a hotel desk. Sound is warm and full without being slow. Kick drums land, bass lines are separate from them, and there is enough air at the top that cymbals do not turn into hiss. Anyone coming from a studio monitor headphone will find them coloured. Anyone coming from consumer wireless will find them astonishing. The wooden cups mark if you are careless. Mine went face down on a desk once and picked up a scuff that no amount of polishing has removed. That is the only blemish on them.

These arrived as a fortieth birthday present from a very patient wife and have been in daily use since. Closed-back was the requirement, because the alternative is everyone in the house hearing whatever is on. Isolation is good rather than total. Conversation two rooms away is gone, but a doorbell still gets through, which is probably for the best. The bass is the headline: 50mm biodyna drivers with real slam and none of the woolliness that usually comes with it. 18 months in the leather on the headband has creased where it flexes and one cup swivel has developed a faint click when it moves. Neither affects anything. The pads are on their original set and show no cracking, which given how warm the ears get in summer is more than I expected.

Bought to replace an open-backed pair that had become impossible in a house with two people working from home. The trade is a slightly smaller stage and a lot more privacy, and by now the stage is not something anyone here misses. One practical note for anyone with a big head like mine: the headband adjusts nearly 4cm and there is still room at the top of the range.
