Silent in a room where that matters
Too big for the shelf under a desk
Quick and completely silent in a room where that matters, though the tower is a good deal bigger than the picture suggests and it will not go on the shelf under the desk
Used for: Less than a month
Boots before the screen does
No optical drive, if that still matters to you
Boots faster than my monitor can wake up, and it does not make a sound!
Used for: More than a year
Two machines onto the domain with no fuss at all
Bought two of these for the practice when the old machines had got to the point where staff were making tea while they booted. The difference has been out of all proportion to what was spent. They come up in about fifteen seconds from cold, they hold a day's worth of tabs, a video call and the patient system open at once, and neither has fallen over in the time we have had them. The practical points that matter in an office: the ports on the front are where a person can reach them, the case comes apart without tools if a drive ever needs adding, and they are quiet enough that the reception one does not need hiding. Windows 11 Pro on both, so they went onto the domain without any fuss!
Used for: More than a year
Forgotten under a desk, which is the whole point
Display outputs are awkward against a wall
It went under a desk in my home office and has been forgotten there, which is the highest praise a computer can get. Eighteen months on it still boots in under twenty seconds, still runs a dozen tabs and a video call without the fan coming up, and still has three empty memory slots for the day that changes. The only real gripe is the port layout at the back, which puts the display outputs where a wall makes them awkward to reach!
Used for: 3–6 months
Nobody ever waits for it
No card reader on the front
Silent, quick, and it has never once made anybody wait. The only thing missing is a card reader on the front
Used for: 6–12 months
A brief tick from the drive cage on waking
A year of daily use and the one criticism is the noise the drive cage makes when it wakes, a brief tick that carries in a quiet room. Everything else has been faultless and it still boots in seconds.
Used for: 1–3 months
No support calls from a parent, which is a first
Heavier than an older person can shift alone
Set up for a parent who needs a computer to simply work, and it has. Six weeks in and there have been no calls about it, which is a first. It came on and stayed on, both screens worked at the first try, and the keyboard and mouse were recognised without anybody having to think about drivers, though the tower is heavier than I would like for somebody to move on their own.
Used for: 3–6 months
Awake before the monitor is
Deeper than a shallow desk allows
Bought to replace a tower that had taken to thinking about things for a second or two before doing them, which is unbearable when it happens forty times an hour. This one is awake before the monitor is, in about 12 seconds from cold. A dozen tabs, a spreadsheet and a call all at once and nothing slows down. It has not been restarted for anything but updates since the day I set it up.
