Three stars is about expectations rather than faults. It is well made and the fixing dogs bite properly into plasterboard, but an in-ceiling sub is always going to be fighting physics: the void behind it is not sealed, so the bottom end depends entirely on what your loft insulation is doing. Ours ended up sounding boomy at one end of the room and thin at the other.

The joists in our 1930s semi are at 400mm centres and the can just fits between them, which I genuinely did not expect from an eight inch driver. Went in from below with the ceiling still intact and no plastering afterwards. Delighted!

Went above the landing to feed a pair of Control ceiling speakers downstairs in an open-plan room, driven off the second zone of a stereo amp. Impedance is the thing to get right here: it is the 8 ohm model, not the transformer one, so if your installer has planned a 100 volt line this is the wrong box. Nine months in and it does what a sub in a ceiling can do, which is fill the bottom two octaves without giving away where it is. What it cannot do is the physical thump of a floor-standing sub, however much you turn it up. If you want the sofa to move, buy a box for the floor.

Our sparky fitted this along with six ceiling speakers during a rewire, and I would say the single most useful thing I did was give him the cut-out template well before he started. He worked out where the joists and the bathroom waste were and moved two positions on the plan before anything was cut. The hole is 250mm and the can is deep, so it is not something you drop in as an afternoon job. Ours needed a small section of insulation lifting and a batten adding to give the dogs something to pull against. Four months in it sounds excellent for what it is, and it disappears into the ceiling exactly as intended. Four stars because the instructions assume a new build with the ceiling open.
