  • Description
  • The white JBL Control 47C/T is a passive 6.5" coaxial ceiling loudspeaker with a multi-tap transformer designed for voice amplification and foreground music reproduction in a variety of venues ranging from boardrooms to bistros. The 60W transformer allows the Control 47C/T to be driven by 70V, 100V, or 8-Ohm power amplifiers (available separately). Each Control 47C/T is equipped with a durable 6.5" polypropylene woofer and a 1" soft dome tweeter, yielding a frequency response of 75 Hz to 17 kHz, and a continuous program power capacity of 150W. Removable locking input connectors, detachable grilles, cutout templates, paint shields, and C-ring / tile rail suspension systems contribute to easy installation.

    Used for: 3–6 months

    Pros

    Accurate template

    Cons

Grille clips need a suction cup to get off again

    Comment

Template in the box matched the cut-out to the millimetre, but do check the depth

Used for: Less than a month

    Pros

Screw terminals you can actually get at from a ladder

    Cons

Heavier than they look when you are holding one overhead

    Comment

Our electrician did the fitting and said they were the tidiest ceiling speakers he had put in this year, mostly because the terminals are a proper screw block rather than spring clips you cannot reach above your head. Four went up in an afternoon including the cable pull through the loft.

    Pros

Long cable run to a second zone with no hiss

    Comment

Fitted these in a garden room that doubles as a home office, wired back to a small amp in the house on a second zone. The run is about 18 metres through the loft and down the cavity, and there is no hiss at all at the far end. Being able to switch the whole zone off from the amp rather than at each speaker was the thing I did not know I wanted. Superb bit of kit!

    Used for: 3–6 months

    Comment

A builder specified these across a whole house refurbishment, 22 of them in the end, and having lived in the result for a while I can see why he did. The advantage of a coaxial driver in a ceiling is that the sound comes from one point rather than two, so you do not get the odd effect of walking under a speaker and hearing the treble arrive first. Standing in the hallway you genuinely cannot tell which one is playing. The white grilles took the ceiling paint without any loss of top end, which the decorator was nervous about. My only reservation is the price against what a pair of decent bookshelf speakers would cost, and the fact that once they are in, they are in. If you move a wall you move a speaker. Worth it for a house you intend to stay in, harder to justify otherwise.

  • SSSophie S.2 August 2026

    Used for: 6–12 months

    Pros

Drops into an existing 208mm hole

    Cons

The old grille clips leave marks you will need to fill

    Comment

Bought a pair to replace some ancient builders-grade ceiling speakers that had gone papery. Same 208mm hole, straight swap, no plastering. The difference in the top end was obvious before the second one was even in!

  • IWIvy W.29 July 2026

    Used for: 3–6 months

    Pros

Have survived a steamy bathroom ceiling so far

    Cons

Not rated for a wet zone, so placement matters

    Comment

Two pairs went into a bathroom and en suite ceiling, which I was warned against, so for anyone else wondering: they are not rated for a wet zone and ours are outside the splash area, above the door line. Five months in with the shower on morning and night and there is no sign of the grilles marking or the cones sagging.

Used for: Less than a month

    Cons

You will still need a filler and a paint touch-up

    Comment

Went in through the old downlight holes with barely any patching

  • HKHarry K.6 July 2026

Used for: More than a year

    Pros

Even coverage from the front row to the back of a hall

    Cons

Getting the grilles back off after painting takes patience

    Comment

Six of these have been running background music in our village hall since the refurbishment, on a 100 volt line with a mixer amp behind the stage. Volunteers of all ages have to work it and nobody has broken anything yet. The committee were worried they would look industrial against the new plaster. Painted in with the ceiling they are invisible, and the coverage means the folk at the back of the hall hear the announcements as clearly as the front row!

  • IDIsla D.15 June 2026

    Used for: 1–3 months

    Pros

Runs at 8 ohms or on a 100 volt line, so the plan can change

    Cons

Cut-out is big enough that a joist in the wrong place ruins your day

    Comment

Eight of these went into a new build kitchen, hallway and snug, and the thing that decided it over the cheaper options was the transformer. You can run them at 8 ohms off a normal stereo amp or tap them onto a 100 volt line, so the wiring plan does not have to be final on day one. The cut-out is 208mm and the template in the box is accurate, but do check what is above you before the hole saw goes anywhere near. We lost an afternoon to a joist sitting 40mm off where the plan said it was, and moving a hole once it is cut is not a thing you can do. Six weeks in, the sound is exactly what a distributed system should be: even, uncoloured, and quiet enough at low level to talk over. Four stars only because the tile clamps are fiddly with plasterboard this thin.

  • AHArthur H.3 June 2026

    Used for: 6–12 months

    Pros

Even level right across an open-plan floor

    Cons

You need more of them than you first think

    Comment

Open-plan downstairs, four of them, and the music follows you from the kitchen island to the sofa without ever getting louder
