Four stars, and the missing one is Razer Synapse. It arrives as a hub that then downloads modules, wants to sign you in, and reappears in the tray after every Windows update whether you asked it to or not. Once the actuation depths are written to a profile you can mostly ignore it, but you cannot be rid of it if you ever want to change anything. The board underneath is very good indeed. Optical switches that have not developed a single chatter, a case with no flex, caps that still look new, and stabilisers on the space bar that are quiet without any fiddling. Four months in and the only maintenance has been a brush round the edges.

The caps are the unsung part. Textured PBT with the legends shining through rather than printed on top, and after a lot of hours the WASD block looks the same as the number row. My last board was glossy on four keys before the year was out. Sound is a sharp clack rather than a thock, so it is not an office board, but at home it is fine.

8000Hz polling is a headline number you will never feel

Worth saying plainly: the polling rate is the least interesting thing about this keyboard. I ran it at the highest setting for a fortnight, dropped it to a quarter of that, and could not tell in a blind swap with a friend flipping it while I played. What it did do was push CPU use up on an older machine. What is worth paying for is the rapid trigger. Holding a direction and tapping the opposite one no longer produces the little dead moment you get on a mechanical, and that is a real change in how the game feels, not a spec sheet line. Build is excellent. The case is a single piece of aluminium with no flex anywhere, the caps are still crisp, and nothing has come loose. If you want a fast board, buy it for the switches and leave the polling somewhere sensible.

The analogue optical switches took some adjustment before I trusted them, mostly because a key that registers at half a millimetre catches every accidental brush. Once the depth was set sensibly it became the fastest board I have played on!
