Compiles that took ten minutes now take under three
Anything that expects an x86 build still needs coaxing
The reason for 128GB was a local Kubernetes cluster plus a database and a browser with far too many tabs, and it swallows all of that with room spare. Memory pressure has been green every single time I have looked, which after years of watching a swap file thrash is a strange kind of luxury. Where it still bites is the software that has not caught up. Two of our internal tools only ship x86 binaries and they run, but slowly enough that I keep a small Linux box on the network for those jobs. Five months in that is my only real complaint, and it is not really the fault of the laptop. Battery on a full day of meetings and light editing comes in around eight hours, close enough to the claim that I stopped counting.

One cable to the dock and the whole desk wakes up
Docking has been faultless, which was not a given after the last machine needed a reboot every second morning to see its monitors. Nine months in and it has never failed to wake both screens and the wired network on one lead. The one mark off is heat under sustained load. Nothing dangerous, but the left side of the keyboard gets warm enough on a long compile that you notice it under the palm, and the fans do eventually spin up rather than stay silent.

Replaced a desktop that filled half the desk and I have not missed it once. The same builds finish faster, the room is quiet, and I got about forty centimetres of desk back. The display is the other upgrade nobody warned me about. Text at native resolution is so much crisper than the 1440p monitor I had been squinting at that I have stopped using the external one altogether!

Handles a dozen containers and two IDEs without breaking a sweat
Still the machine I reach for first every morning, though I do wish it had one more USB-C on the right hand side
Used for: More than a year
The keyboard is what sold me and it is still the part I would miss most. Enough travel that you feel each key land, no rattle, and the backlight is even across the whole board rather than blotchy in the corners. It has been through a year of trains, hot desks and one very cramped 3 hour flight without a single complaint. The hinge is exactly as stiff as the day it arrived, which sounds like a small thing until you use a machine where it is not.

Two house moves and a hundred branch switches later and it has not once needed a restart. Quiet, quick, no drama
Used for: 3–6 months
Set it up alongside a work Windows machine expecting to prefer the Windows one for the toolchain, and that laptop now lives in a drawer. Everything just works, the terminal is quick, and the screen makes a day of reading diffs far easier on the eyes!
