Bought after a lot of comparison against the thinner options and the deciding factor was that this one has somewhere to put the heat. It has proved right. Long sessions at 78 degrees, no throttling, and the palm rest stays cool while the machine gets on with it. The noise is the only tax.

The cooling has never once let it down. The keyboard deck stays merely warm where the old machine used to get uncomfortable, and five months in the temperatures under a long session still sit around 76 degrees rather than knocking on ninety. The charger is the only thing I would change and there is probably no changing it. It is 330W and it is built like one, so the bag is heavy whenever the machine leaves the desk.

Two stars is entirely about a noise, because everything else is exactly what was advertised. There is a high pitched whine from the left of the chassis whenever the graphics are doing anything at all, and in a quiet room it is more distracting than the fans, which at least sound like they are doing a job. It is not constant. Browsing, writing, video, all silent. Anything with a frame rate and it starts, and once you have heard it you cannot stop hearing it. Headphones cover it and I did not spend this much to wear headphones at my own desk. The rest of the machine is genuinely excellent, which is why this is frustrating rather than disappointing. Fast, cool, well built, and a keyboard I would happily work on all day.

Everything about the way this handles heat is better than the thinner machine it replaced, a good 10 degrees cooler under the same load, and it is quieter doing it too. The size is the whole reason why, and I made my peace with that before ordering!

Performance has not moved at all in over a year, which is the main thing. The only sign of age is the very slightest movement in the screen when the desk gets knocked, and it was rock solid when new. Everything else is as it was
