Used for: More than a year
Boringly reliable through two full school years
A year and a half in a school office and it has coped with everything term time can throw at it. Reports, letters home, the enormous print run before parents' evening. It has been reliable to the point of being dull: toner twice, paper constantly, nothing else at all. The copies come off square and the feeder has never chewed an original, which the staff appreciate more than any specification.
Used for: 3–6 months
Quick on long runs, and the duplex is reliable
Menus assume Canon's vocabulary, and card feeds at an angle
Good, solid machine that does the ordinary things very well. Long mono runs are quick, the duplex is reliable, and the tray capacity means nobody is feeding it paper all morning. The reservations are all round the edges. The panel is bright and responsive, but the menu structure assumes you already know Canon's vocabulary, so the first month involved a certain amount of hunting about. Scan to email needed our settings typing in by hand and there is no way to copy them from one destination to the next. And on heavy card the feed is uncertain: roughly one sheet in ten goes through at an angle, so anything that matters gets done one at a time.

It wakes with a clunk you can hear down the corridor
A faultless machine, but it wakes with a clunk that carries down the corridor at half past eight
Used for: 3–6 months
One jam in five months of all-day use
Put into a GP surgery where the machine runs all day and stops for nobody. Referral letters, patient lists, endless forms. Five months in and it has jammed exactly once, on a sheet that had already been through the printer. The scanning is what has made the difference. A stack of notes goes through the feeder in one pass and lands in the right folder, and the quality is good enough that the scan is still legible when somebody prints it out again.

Keeps pace without getting hot or noisy about it
Colour is a touch flat beside a dedicated machine
Runs a busy estate agency office and it has not missed a beat. Brochures, tenancy packs, hundreds of colour particulars, and it keeps pace without getting hot or noisy about any of it. The feeder takes a stack of signed documents and scans them straight into the system, which has taken a job off somebody's desk entirely

Copies come off square
The bypass tray is fiddly with card
Quick, quiet, and the copies come off square. No complaints from anybody yet!
Used for: 3–6 months
A sensible machine for an office that needs a lot of ordinary printing done cheaply. Pages come out clean, the duplex is quick, and it holds enough paper that filling it is a job for Monday morning rather than something done between meetings. Where it is less impressive is the software around it. Scan destinations have to be set up one at a time on the panel, and the panel is not built for typing, so an afternoon of mine disappeared into that. Printing from phones goes through the standard system print menu, which is a relief, but anything beyond that wants software installing on every machine. None of which stops it being a good buy. It simply is not the effortless one the brochure describes.
Used for: 6–12 months
Went in to replace two desktop machines and a fax that nobody would admit to using. Eight months on it has done everything those did and rather more: double-sided copies, scanning to email straight from the panel, and a print queue that holds a job until you are standing in front of the machine. That last part has been the surprise. Confidential letters no longer sit in the tray waiting for somebody to collect them, and the paper wasted on jobs printed twice has dropped away to nothing.

Nobody needed any training on it
It fills its corner completely
Installed on a Tuesday and by Wednesday everybody had forgotten there had ever been a different machine. Fast, quiet, and the panel is close enough to the old one that nobody needed showing!
