The eSIM-only version is cheaper for a reason and you should know what that reason is before you order. Moving my number across took a phone call and about forty minutes, and my provider's app made a meal of it. Once done, it has been faultless. The phone itself is the same as the one with the tray, and the missing slot has bought back a little battery life if the forum talk is to be believed. It sees me out to bedtime either way.

Travelled with it twice in four months and the eSIM has turned out to be the best thing about it. A local data plan bought in the airport queue and running before the bags came off, no fiddling with a paperclip and no tiny plastic tray to lose in a hotel room. You do need a signal to set one up, mind, which is a fine joke when you have just landed!

Five stars for the phone with a warning about the shopping. Check your provider supports an eSIM properly before you order this version, because mine technically does and in practice took three attempts and a supervisor. Once it was on, everything since has been exactly what you would expect at this end of the market. The screen in the sun on the school run is readable without shading it, it has not once got warm, and a full day of use leaves me with something in reserve.

Second one of these in the family and I bought the eSIM version deliberately this time, having watched my son do the whole transfer from his old handset in about ten minutes with nothing but a wifi connection. As a phone it is the same monster everyone has already written about. The camera in a dim room is the part that keeps earning its keep, family photographs indoors in winter come out looking like the room rather than a sepia postcard. The things I would change are the same as everybody's: it is heavy, it is wide, and the case that fits it properly costs more than a case has any business costing!
