Bought for my father, who reads three newspapers before breakfast and had been squinting at a tiny handset for far too long. He does not care that it folds twice, he cares that the text is the size of a book page. Setting it up took an evening because the app store is not the one he knew, but once the news apps were on he has not asked me a single question since!

Three screens is two more than I needed, and I say that as someone who wanted this badly enough to save for it. The middle panel gets used for maps and mail and the full spread comes out perhaps once a week, usually to show somebody. Heat while navigating is the real gripe. Cradled on the windscreen with the sun on it the top of the phone gets genuinely hot and the brightness drops back to save itself, which is exactly when you want to read the next turn. Fine phone, wrong phone for me.

Signal is the thing I was warned about and it has been better than expected out in the sticks, where my old handset used to drop to one bar on the drive home. Camera is a proper Leica-ish affair in daylight and holds together in a dim pub, though it warms the colours more than I would like. Weight is the compromise. At this size you notice it in a shirt pocket, and one-handed use is out of the question.

Came to this from a Fold that had done four years of hard service, so I knew what living with a folding screen meant before I ordered. The tri-fold is a different proposition again: fully open it is a small tablet, folded once it is a wide phone, folded twice it is a thick bar you can hold in one hand at a bus stop. The screen in direct sun is where it earns the money. Reading on a bench at midday it stays legible without me shading it with a hand, which the last two phones I owned could not manage. What I would warn about is the case situation and the charging. Nothing on the high street fits it, so you are ordering from the maker and paying for the privilege, and a top-up from flat takes long enough that I plug it in before dinner rather than at bedtime.

Impressive bit of engineering, but I am not sure it is a phone yet. Half the apps I use every day stretch across the widest screen with a great white margin down the side, and the banking one simply refuses to rotate. Getting the apps on in the first place is the bigger job. There is no Play Store, so everything comes from the AppGallery or sideloaded, and two of mine have never worked properly since. Lovely hardware waiting for the software to catch up.

Still the most interesting thing in my pocket and I would buy it again, with one caveat that has not gone away: the outer glass has picked up two fine scratches from keys, and at this money I expected the same treatment the inner panel gets, though neither has spread since.

Bought it as a reading device that happens to make calls, and on that count it is superb. A newspaper page fits at a size my eyes are happy with, two documents sit side by side for proofreading, and folded to a third it is narrower than the phone it replaced. Eight months in the hinges still snap shut with the same click. No sag, no dust in the folds, and the crease across the middle has not moved.

My work phone for well over a year now and it has replaced the laptop on short trips entirely. Two documents open side by side on the train, a spreadsheet that does not need pinching, and the keyboard splits across the fold so thumb typing is genuinely quick. Battery has held up better than the reviews suggested. A day of mail, maps and a video call still leaves me something in the evening, and it takes a charge back quickly enough over lunch.
