Picture and noise are both excellent: it hangs above the sofa and in a quiet scene you have to listen for it. Film and telly are exactly what you would hope for at that size. Gaming is another matter. There is enough delay through the smart platform that anything needing quick hands feels like playing through treacle, and switching source does not fix it. Driving games and slower things are fine. Five months in, I have accepted that the console stays on the telly.

Having the streaming apps on the projector itself sounds like a gimmick until you live with it: one remote, one lead to the wall socket, nothing else in the room at all. Point it at the wall, pick something, watch. The pointer remote is the same one as our telly, so nobody in the house needed teaching!

Garden cinema in July, meeting room in November, and the same box does both without complaint. Outside it goes on a table and throws a good 100 inches onto a sheet pegged to the fence, and even before it is properly dark you can follow what is happening, which was never true of the cheap one it replaced. Indoors it lives on the ceiling bracket above the dining table. Two summers of that and the only things to report are dust in the vents and the occasional lens wipe.

Bought as a permanent ceiling fixture in a room that doubles as a study, and the laser has been the making of it: no lamp to source, no gradual dimming, and it lights up within a couple of seconds from cold. What I would tell anyone considering one is to plan the cable run first. Ours is a long HDMI over an optical lead through a ceiling void, and the cheap cable we tried first would not carry 4K at all, which took an evening of swearing to work out. The fan is quiet enough for a bedroom and the geometry has not moved a millimetre since installation. The smart side has slowed a little over time, the way they all do, and a stick handles most of the watching now.

This does two jobs in our house and does both of them well. On weekdays it throws slides and a spreadsheet onto the wall of the home office with the blind up, and at weekends it does films at 100 inches with the lights off. Brightness is why it manages the first job. Most projectors at this resolution give up the moment there is daylight in the room; this one keeps enough contrast that text stays readable, which is all anyone needs. The shift range is the thing to check before you buy. Ours needed to sit further off centre than the numbers allow and the mount ended up a foot from where I had planned it, which meant a fresh hole in the ceiling and a longer cable. Nine months in, that is my only complaint.

Sound routing was the only puzzle here: our amp is old enough to want an optical lead and this offers ARC, so a small converter now lives behind the sofa. Once that was sorted the whole setup is one cable and a power lead.

Our old telly looked enormous when it arrived and looks like a postage stamp beside this. Ceiling mounted about 3 metres back above the sofa with the cable run behind the coving, and the room looks exactly as it did before until somebody switches it on and the whole wall lights up.
