A year and more of a small bookkeeping business and it has done everything but the tea. Client records go in as a bundle and come out as one PDF per client, split on the blank sheets we put between them, which is the sort of thing you only discover the software can do after you have spent a month doing it by hand. The missing star is the roller life. Ours started skewing sooner than I expected and the replacement kit is a noticeable fraction of what the scanner cost.

Digitising a filing cabinet before a house move, which is exactly the job this size of scanner is for. Bank statements, school reports, a lifetime of certificates and a folder of my mother's letters. It goes to a searchable PDF straight away, so when the solicitor asked for the FENSA certificate it was a search box rather than an afternoon!

Set it up scanning to a network folder in about the time it takes to make a coffee, without a PC being involved at all, which for a machine at this price is not something I expected. Wireless was the only fiddly bit and it got there.

Feeds beautifully until it meets a receipt. Anything narrower than about a third of a page slides sideways in the hopper, and the guides do not come in far enough to hold it. Everything else it takes without a thought.

A handful of separate components to install before it scans once

The reason for this one over the pure sheet-fed model is the flatbed hidden underneath, and after a week of using it I would not go back. A small practice's paper is never all loose: there is always a passport, a stapled set of accounts, a photograph somebody wants keeping. The feeder does the bulk, the lid does the rest, and the two live in the same footprint as one machine. Speed is honest. Fifty pages a minute on plain paper is what the listing says and what it actually does with a full hopper, and duplex costs nothing because both sides go through together. The grumble is the bundled capture software, which insists on installing a handful of separate components and then puts an icon for each on the desktop. Once it is set up you never see it again, but the first hour is more clicking than anyone should have to do for a scanner.
