Coming off a Series watch that wanted the charger every night, the battery here is the whole story. Always-on display, notifications through the day, an hour of tracked exercise, and it still shows 40 per cent on the third morning. It is a big lump on the wrist, though. Under a shirt cuff it catches on everything.

The extra button gets used far more than I expected, mostly for starting a walk without putting wet hands on the screen. Sleeping in the ocean band is another matter, it leaves a mark by morning!

Bought it for hill walking and the GPS is the part that has impressed me. Under heavy tree cover on a valley path the track comes back clean, where my phone used to draw me swimming through the woods on a 12 mile round. The map on the wrist is small but readable, and the side button set to the torch has been more use than any of the fitness apps
