It has been worn every single day since it arrived, swimming included, and the battery is unchanged, still around 60 per cent on the third evening. That is the part I would not have believed when I bought it. The alpine band is the only chore. Grit works its way into the weave from the garden and the gym, and if you do not wash it every fortnight it starts to feel scratchy and looks grey. Easy enough, but it is a job, and a rubber strap never asked me to do it.

The single biggest change is that charging stopped being a daily event. It goes on the puck for 40 minutes on a Sunday while I read the paper, and that is the whole of my relationship with the charger. Everything else follows from it, because the watch is on my wrist at night, so the sleep data is complete rather than full of gaps where it sat charging. Swimming is the other thing worth calling out. It counts lengths correctly, the screen locks so the water cannot press buttons, and the noise it makes ejecting the water afterwards still amuses me. Eight months of pool sessions and nothing has got inside. Four stars rather than five because the phone app is a mess of accounts and prompts, and because a watch this size is a genuine commitment. It catches on jumper sleeves, it looks daft under a suit, and my wife calls it the diving bell.

Snorkelling with it is the thing I never expected to use and now do on every trip, depth and water temperature on the wrist at 6 metres down without a separate gauge. Rinse the strap afterwards, though, or it is stiff by morning.

Brightness is what sold me in the first week. Out on the water with the sun straight onto it I can read the numbers without shading the screen with my other hand, which every watch before this one needed. In a dark room it drops low enough not to wake anybody. The orange button is a shade too easy to catch. Putting a coat on has started a workout twice now, and I only found out when it congratulated me on 40 minutes of rowing I had not done!

Took it on a four day walk with no charger in the pack, tracking the whole route each day, and it came home with enough left to see me through the drive back. That is the difference between this and every other watch I have worn, and it is the only real reason to pay what it costs. GPS under the tree line is the other half of it. On the forest sections the track comes back as a clean line where the phone in my pocket drew something a drunk might have produced. Elevation matched the map within 10 metres at every summit. Four stars only because the screen is a magnet for a jacket sleeve and the wrist detection lights it up constantly in the dark. Minor, but on a night walk it grates.
