Two stars, and the reason is the same one every time I pick it up: standby. Shut on Friday with sixty percent, opened on Monday at nine, and that has been true since the first month. Everything else is decent. The screen is lovely for documents, the pen works, and it drives a monitor off one cable at my desk. But a machine at this money should be usable the way a tablet is usable, which is to say picked up and used, not plugged in first. I have turned off every power setting I can find and it has made a difference of a few percent. The folio has also gone shiny where my wrists sit, which after a year of ordinary office use looks worse than it should.

It came into the house as a work machine and has quietly become the thing everyone borrows. Films on the train with headphones, the six year old drawing on it for an hour while dinner cooks, my wife doing the accounts at the kitchen table. A weekend away needs the charger in the bag, no getting round that, but a full day of ordinary use has never run it flat. Two years on, the screen has no marks and the kickstand has not loosened at all!

Bought to replace a work laptop and eighteen months later it has, with one caveat that anyone considering it should hear. On a desk it is faultless. One cable to the dock brings the two monitors, the keyboard and the network, and the VPN behaves exactly as it did on the laptop because it is the same Windows underneath. On a lap it is not a laptop. The kickstand needs depth that a lap does not have, so on a train with the tray down it is fine and on a plane in economy it is not. Battery has held up better than expected, still a full day of meetings and mail, though it wants longer on the charger than the old laptop did. The fan comes on under anything heavy, which in a quiet meeting room is more noticeable than the noise deserves.

Drawing was the reason for buying it and on that it delivers: the pen lag is gone, the pressure curve feels right, and a stylus that sticks to the edge magnetically is a small thing that stops it getting lost. What nobody mentions is that Windows is still Windows with a finger. Half the buttons in the older programs are the size of a grain of rice, and tablet mode helps with the shell and nothing else. The screen shape suits an A4 document better than a widescreen laptop ever did, and a drawing on one side with reference photos on the other actually works at this size. A terabyte matters if you keep layered files. Four stars because at this money the folio and the pen really ought to be in the box.

Lectures are the whole reason it was bought, and handwriting straight onto a slide deck beats any notebook, though the folio is what makes it usable for writing the essays up afterwards. The pen sticks to the side and has never once been left behind!

Hard to give a machine five stars when it needs three accessories before it does the job it is sold for. The tablet alone is not a laptop: add the folio, add the pen, add a dock, and you are past the price of a very good laptop that needs none of them. It is well made and the screen is the best thing about it. But two ports, one of which is usually the charger, means a hub lives in the bag permanently, and at this end of the market I resent that.

No learning curve at all: the work account signed in, the desktop arrived from the old machine inside the hour, and every awkward internal program that would never be an app just ran. That is the argument for this over an iPad, though you pay handsomely for the privilege.
