Turn the smoothing off before anyone watches a match on this. On the setting it arrives with, football looks like a soap opera and the players glide about as if they were on ice. Off, though, it is exactly as it should be, and the rest of the picture is excellent for the price!

The panel deserves better than the computer bolted to it. Picture quality is genuinely very good for the money, bright and sharp and clean on fast motion once the smoothing is off, and I would happily give 5 stars for that alone. Then you have to use it. The home screen opens on a row of films someone has paid to put there. Scrolling is not smooth. Apps take a beat too long to open and now and then forget where you were. The settings are spread across two different menus, one of which looks like it was drawn a decade ago, and the smoothing has to be turned off for each picture mode rather than once. An update in the spring shuffled the rows about and put the energy saving back on, which dimmed everything until I found it. Three stars is the panel pulling the software up.

This was bought as the sensible option, a big set for a room that gets a lot of sun, without paying for the badge. 14 months later I would choose it again without thinking twice. Brightness is the reason. There is no time of day when the picture gives up, and the anti-glare is good enough that the window behind the sofa never shows up in a dark scene. Sport is clean and the console mode is instant. Nothing has drifted a shade since the day it was set up. The sound was thin from the start and a bar went underneath within the first month, which I would budget for rather than be disappointed by. There is a little glow around bright things at night as well, though after a year I genuinely do not see it.

Cross-shopped this against two sets with better-known badges and could not make the extra money make sense. 9 months on, that still feels like the right call. It is bright enough for a room with the blinds up, the motion on sport is clean once you drop the smoothing, and the console mode is as quick as anything I have played on. The compromises are exactly where you would expect: the sound is thin under music, and the home screen carries a row of promoted films that cannot be turned off. Neither is worth the difference in price to me, and I would buy the same again.

Whatever mode this ships in ought to be called shop window: everything oversharpened, the colour pushed and the smoothing on full. 20 minutes with the settings and it is a different set, natural and clean and quick. The high refresh mode with the console is superb, which is what it was bought for. It loses a star, though, because most people will never make those changes and will think this is how it looks
