Measure the space before it arrives. Ours would not go into the cubby it was meant for and now stands beside the desk like a small filing cabinet. On performance there is nothing to say against it, since heavy scenes open in the time it takes to sit down.

Three stars is about living with it rather than about the specification. Under a long render it does not throttle, which was the thing I worried about most, and a five-hour job finishes at the speed it started. The problem is what it does the rest of the time. The fans step up and down constantly, quiet, then a surge, then quiet again, and in a room where two of us work it is the one noise nobody manages to tune out. There is no setting in the firmware that smooths it off. I have noticed it on the electricity bill as well, which I had not really costed for. Fast machine, restless neighbour.

I came to this off a laptop that had spent two years pretending it could do the work. It could, in the sense that it finished, but every heavy comp meant sitting with a fan by my elbow and a keyboard too hot to rest my hands on. The difference is not really speed, although it is much quicker. It is that the machine no longer decides how long a thing takes. A comp that used to be a twenty-minute wait is now a coffee at most, and I can carry on working in something else while it goes. Eight months in and I have stopped planning the day around renders, which matters far more than I expected it to.
