It sits in the family room and gets used by three people for completely different things — accounts, homework, and a teenager who found the graphics card and now plays on it in the evening. That last part is why it earns its keep. One machine, one lead, no tower humming under the table, and nobody arguing about whose turn it is on the laptop. The screen is big enough that two of us can read it at once without either one leaning in!

The thing nobody mentions about a big all-in-one is the heat. It is a big panel with a proper graphics card behind it, and in a small back bedroom with the door shut you know it has been on for the afternoon. Not unpleasant in January. Otherwise it has been faultless. Two years of photo work, no crashes, no fan that ever becomes a nuisance, and it still looks like something you would choose to have on a desk rather than something you tolerate.

Wall-mounted it on a bracket in the studio and the desk underneath is now completely clear, which was the entire reason for buying an all-in-one instead of another tower. Worth knowing that the mount points are behind a plate you have to prise off, and the power lead then wants to come out of the bottom edge, so there is a small amount of swearing involved. Once it is up it looks like a very expensive picture frame, and it drives a second screen off the back for the timeline.

Bought to replace a tower and a separate 27-inch monitor, and the honest surprise is that the screen is better than the monitor it replaced. Colour out of the box was close enough that my calibration barely moved it, and at normal working distance on a shallow desk it is exactly the right size. The graphics card in it is not a gaming card in any serious sense, but it means Lightroom exports and the occasional bit of video do not turn into an afternoon. The memory has been enough for how I work. What I would tell anyone considering one: the stand is deep. Mine takes about a hand's width more desk than the old monitor arm did, and there is no way around that without a wall mount.

The webcam and the speakers were the parts I expected to replace and have not. On a call people ask what I am using, which has never once happened with a laptop, and the speakers are good enough that the little Bluetooth thing has gone in a drawer. Five months in, my one reservation stands: nothing in it can be changed. The memory is what it is, the drive is what it is, and if the panel ever goes then the whole machine goes with it. I decided I could live with that, though I would think again on a cheaper one.
