Used for: Less than a month
Records at a high sample rate for the price of a takeaway
The software bundle wants three separate accounts before it will install
Hardware first: it works, it is quiet, it is bus powered, and it appeared on both a Mac and a Windows laptop with no driver at all. For the money that is the whole review. The rest of my evening went on the bundled software. There is a DAW, there are plugins, there are sample packs, and each of them lives behind a different account with a different code from a different card in the box. I got there eventually and some of it is genuinely useful, but I would rather have paid a little more and been left alone to get on with it.
Used for: 6–12 months
The plastic case creaks if you pick it up wrong
Does everything I need and cost me almost nothing
Used for: More than a year
It has outlasted two laptops and a phase of giving up on music
A year and more in a bag that gets thrown around, and it still records a clean vocal and still cost less than the microphone that plugs into it
Used for: 6–12 months
Plug it in and it simply works, on any machine
Cheap, quiet, and it has never once let me down!
Used for: 1–3 months
Two combo inputs and phantom power for the price of a microphone cable
Bus power means the headphone amp has nothing in reserve
I record voice for audiobooks in a treated cupboard, and I needed something that would not add noise to a very quiet signal. This does not. With the gain past three quarters on a large diaphragm condenser there is nothing behind the voice at all, which is the entire job done. The monitoring switch is a blend knob rather than an on and off, which turns out to be the better idea. A bit of the computer, a bit of yourself, no lag either way. Where it shows the price is in the headphone output. It is loud enough for editing and just about loud enough for tracking, and if you use anything hungry it will not be. I knew that going in and it has not been a problem, but it is worth saying out loud!
Used for: Less than a month
I wanted the cheapest thing that would record a guitar and a vocal at once without sounding cheap, and this is it. Both inputs take XLR or jack, the instrument setting handles a passive pickup without thinning it out, and the whole lot runs off the laptop with no supply to carry. Nothing about it feels like a compromise yet, though it is early days!
Used for: 1–3 months
Small enough to live in the laptop sleeve
Feels light, in a way that suggests it would not survive a drop
It has been to three rehearsals in a rucksack over the past two months and recorded all of them, which is more than I expected
Used for: Less than a month
The monitor blend knob and the headphone dial are identical to the touch
In a dark room I have twice grabbed the wrong knob and deafened myself. That is the only complaint. Everything else about it is better than a box at this price has any business being.
