The run to the back bedroom ended behind where a wardrobe now stands, which was fine until the desk moved across to the opposite wall. This extended it round the skirting to the new corner without any of the alternatives, which were a fresh run under the floor or a wireless link I did not want. Ten minutes of work, a handful of clips, and it was done. A star off for the stiffness. Getting it round the corner by the door took more persuasion than a cable that thick ought to need, and I had to fix it down every 30cm to stop it standing proud of the wall.

Worth knowing before you plan a route: the socket end is considerably fatter than a plug, and the 12mm hole already drilled through the wall for the original cable would not take it. I ended up with the join sitting on the inside of the wall and the extension running from there, which works but is not what I had drawn on the back of an envelope. If you are extending a cable that passes through anything at all, a hole, a trunking bend, a grommet, measure the socket end first. Once past that it is a good bit of kit. Heavy shielding, a firm click when the old lead seats into it, and the link has been rock steady since. Four stars, and the star is lost to my planning rather than the product.

When the small rack moved from the understairs cupboard out to the garage, three runs were suddenly a couple of metres short, and re-pulling all of them through the wall was not something I was prepared to do. Three of these solved it in an afternoon. The socket ends sit in a row on a shelf behind the rack, the surplus is coiled and tied, and all three links came back at full speed with no errors on the port counters in seven months. The only thing I would change is the size of the socket end. Three of them side by side is a surprisingly bulky arrangement and I had to move a shelf bracket to make room for it. Everything else has been exactly right.

Bought to reach a wall-mounted access point at the far end of a landing, where the existing cable stopped just short of where the bracket had to go. What sold me on an extension rather than a fresh run was not having to lift the stair carpet again. The join sits behind the bracket where nobody will ever see it, the surplus length coils neatly in the void, and the access point has behaved exactly as it did before. Seven months in, no drops, no negotiation problems, and nothing has worked loose despite sitting in a corner that gets hoovered.

The original cable to the office was laid before a desk moved, and ended up sitting a couple of metres short of where it needed to be, which is the sort of discovery that ruins a Saturday. This was the cheap answer. Plug the old lead into the socket end, run the extra along the skirting, done inside ten minutes, and the link has been at full speed ever since. A join is theoretically a weak point and I have measured no difference at all on a gigabit line. The joint itself is the only inelegance. It is a fat plastic lump and it wants to live somewhere out of sight rather than in the middle of a wall.
