Used for: More than a year
Silent, tiny, and it has never once been rebooted in anger
Used for: Less than a month
Ports run out once two screens and a headset are in
Five stars, with one warning: check the port layout before ordering, because two screens, a keyboard, a headset and a webcam use up everything on the back and I am left reaching round for a memory stick.
Used for: 6–12 months
At the desktop by the time you have sat down
External power brick, and only two ports on the front
Replaced a machine that had got so slow my morning routine had become: switch on, go and make coffee, come back and log in. This one is at the desktop in the time it takes to sit down. Ten months in, that has not changed at all, which is the bit that usually goes. The size is the other half of the appeal. It stands on end beside the monitor and takes up about as much room as a hardback, and there is no fan noise at all until something long is running, at which point it is a soft hum you have to listen for. Only two things stop it being perfect: the power supply is an external brick that is bigger than it ought to be, and the front has two ports where three would have been sensible.

Disappears behind the monitor on a bracket
The power brick is bigger than it ought to be
The whole point of this one is the size. It goes on a bracket behind the monitor and the desk is suddenly a desk again, with one cable running down the back instead of a nest of them. A year on, it has not once been the thing holding me up. 128GB is far more than the work needs and it means nothing ever has to be closed. It stays cool behind the screen and the only time it can be heard at all is during a long export.
Used for: 6–12 months
This was bought for a firm's reception desk, where the machine has to be small, silent and impossible to knock over, and it has been all three. It lives on a bracket under the counter. Nobody sees it, nobody hears it, and in eight months the only attention it has needed was a duster round the vents. What has surprised everybody is how quickly it comes up. From a cold start to a usable desktop is about fifteen seconds, and from sleep it is instant, which matters when somebody walks in wanting an appointment moved. It runs the booking system, a browser with a dozen tabs, a mail client and a video call at the same time without a hint of strain. The 128GB is frankly more than the job will ever need, but it does mean nothing will have to be thought about again for years.
Used for: 3–6 months
Nobody realises there is a computer in the room
A hub was needed almost immediately
Sits behind a 27 inch screen on a VESA plate and nobody who comes into the office realises there is a computer in the room at all. Silent, and it wakes the moment the mouse moves, though a hub was needed almost immediately!
