White is the one that does not look like a work phone, and after a few months the frame has stayed clean where I expected grubby edges. It goes into a bag rather than a pocket most days because of the width, but the trade is a screen I can read a script on without squinting.

Unboxed it in the morning and the whole of my old phone was on it by that evening, which is more than I can say for the last time I switched. First impressions: lighter than it looks in photos, the outer screen is a proper phone, and the white back does not slip off a car seat, though it wants a wipe every evening!

Perfectly happy with it, with two caveats for anyone deciding. It is heavy enough that you feel it in a jacket after a long day, and the fingerprint reader on the edge is in the wrong place if you are left handed, which I am. Neither is enough to put me off recommending it, mind.

The part I did not expect to care about is the eSIM handling, two numbers on one handset with no fiddling about, so the work line goes quiet at six and the personal one carries on!

My third folding phone and the first one I have stopped worrying about. The earlier two both developed a line down the middle of the panel within a year; this has been folded twice a day since it arrived and there is nothing to see. The camera is the compromise you make. It is perfectly good in daylight and behind the plain flagship once the light goes, so if photos are the priority there are better phones for less. For everything else, from reading to answering mail on a platform, nothing touches it.

Four stars, and the missing one is entirely about the software rather than the hardware. It arrived with a screenful of apps I had not asked for and a second app store I cannot remove, and every big update puts one or two of them back. The phone underneath all that has been faultless. Hinge is tight, the screen has no marks, and it holds a signal on the branch line through the cutting where everyone else loses theirs. Fifteen months and the battery is barely down on where it started.

Started as an extravagance and turned into the thing I would replace first if it went missing. Recipes propped open on the worktop, a book on the train, two chat windows when the family is arguing about Christmas. A year and a half of daily use has left it looking almost new, white frame and all, which surprised me most. The hinge is quieter than it was on the previous generation and the crease has stopped being something I notice. Battery is the only place it shows its age, and even then it is a top-up at teatime rather than a panic!
