Evening viewing with a side lamp on is perfectly good, which is more than the last projector managed. The auto squaring needed help on our wallpaper, but the manual corners sorted that in a minute and four months on it has not shifted.

The picture is still very good and that is the only reason this is not lower. What has changed is the noise. It was quiet enough at the start; after a couple of years of use the fan has developed a note that sits right in the middle of the room, and in a quiet scene with no music behind it, it is the loudest thing in the house. Dust may well be the cause, and a blow through helped for a month or so before it came back.

The whole appeal is geometry: at 1.5 metres you get a picture that a long throw would want 4 metres for, so it sits on furniture that already existed instead of on a bracket. Placement is still fussy, mind, and there is very little zoom to play with, so the shelf ended up moving twice before it was right.

It came into the house as a temporary fix for a dead telly and has quietly become the main way we watch anything. Indoors it lives on a low unit and throws about 100 inches at the chimney breast; outdoors it goes on the garden table with a sheet pegged to the fence. The outdoor lesson is patience. In June you are waiting until half nine before the picture really works, and an extension lead and a midge candle turn out to matter as much as the projector does. Once it is properly dark the results are ridiculous for the effort involved. Nothing has gone wrong in all that time beyond a filter clean.

Bought after the living room telly gave up in the middle of the football season, and the short throw is what makes it work in this room: a metre and a half from the wall on the sideboard we already owned, no ceiling mount, no cable across the floor. Gaming was the other reason. Through the console at 4K the lag is low enough that nothing feels different from playing on the telly, which I honestly did not expect from a projector at this money. The speaker in it is fine for the news and hopeless for anything else, so the old soundbar came back out of the cupboard on the first evening. Worth knowing before you assume it replaces everything in one go.
