Bought the pair to cover a driveway and a back garden that the old doorbell camera never reached, and mounting them took an afternoon with a drill and a ladder. What sold me was the lack of a subscription. Clips land on the base station indoors, I can scroll back through a week of them without paying anybody, and the app does not nag about an upgrade every time it opens. What I would warn about is wifi. The far camera sits at the bottom of a long garden behind a stone wall and the connection there is marginal, which shows up as a clip that starts a second late. A mesh point in the shed fixed it, but that is another thing to buy. Battery life has been good, roughly two months a charge on the drive camera and longer on the quiet one round the back.

Four cameras at the old house on a monthly plan cost me more each year than this pair cost outright, so the sums were easy. Detection has been the pleasant surprise. It flags people and vehicles and leaves the wheelie bins and the washing alone, and after a fortnight of tuning the zones I get perhaps two alerts a day rather than forty. At three in the morning that difference is the whole thing. The app is a bit basic next to the big names. Scrubbing back through a long recording is clumsy and the desktop view is an afterthought, though for checking who came to the door it does everything I need.

Set both up in an evening without any help, which for me is the headline. The app walks you through it and the mount is a single screw plus a ball joint you can nudge afterwards. Night vision reaches the far end of a twelve metre garden and picks out a fox rather than just a blur. The spotlight coming on is enough to make a person look up, which is half the point of having one!
