Came off a Series 6 that wanted the charger every night. This one leaves on a Friday morning, does the whole weekend on the fells with GPS tracking for maybe five hours of it, and comes home showing 40 per cent. It is a slab on the wrist, mind, and no shirt cuff goes over it!

The action button does the lot on a hill walk: start the route, mark a lap, and no glove has to come off for it. A year on, the titanium case has a couple of scratches on the bezel and neither shows unless you go looking for them.

Bought it when I started open water swimming and it has been out in the sea most weeks since. The 100 metre rating is not marketing: it has been to six metres on a snorkel and the screen is still perfect. Two things stop it being five stars. The cellular side costs a tenner a month on top and I use it perhaps once a fortnight, when I leave the phone in the car at the pool. And the ocean strap goes clammy in warm weather, so I swapped to a plain nylon one from a third party for eight quid and it fits the 49mm lugs without any drama. Battery with the always-on display left enabled is a day and a half of real use rather than the 72 hours quoted, and that is with a run in it. Charge it while you shower and you will never see it flat.

Swapped a Fitbit Charge that only ever counted steps and the difference is silly. The 49mm case looked absurd in the shop and looks fine on my arm, though my wife tried it on and it covered her wrist bone to bone. Orange action button is oddly satisfying!

Training for the Great North Run and the dual band GPS is the bit that justifies it. Down a street of terraces the old Garmin used to wander off and add half a mile; this one holds the line and my 10k splits actually match the route. Overkill for the pavement, and I do not care!

Notifications got triaged down to calls and the site group on the first evening, otherwise the wrist never stops. The sleep numbers I ignore; it scores me eight hours when I know I read until one
