Used for: 6–12 months
Physical knobs on the top for volume, bass and treble
5.1 without rears is still a front-heavy sound
Turned the bass knob up on the top plate and the sofa moved! Bit much for a flat, though
Used for: 1–3 months
Looks like a piece of furniture rather than a black slab
We had a pair of Marshall bookshelf speakers either side of the telly and this replaced both plus the little amp that drove them, so the sideboard has gone from three boxes to one. Aesthetically it is the whole reason you buy it, and in a room with a lot of wood it looks like furniture rather than gear. Sonically it is a step up on anything the telly could do, though I would not pretend the 5.1 badge means what it would with real rears. The height and surround are done with angled drivers and clever processing, and in a 4m by 5m room that is convincing enough. The knobs on the top are the joy of it, one turn and you are in night mode without a menu.
