Bought to go under a telly in a small back room where a full 5.1 was never going to happen. Unboxing to first film was about ten minutes, most of that walking round the sofa while the app listened. It measures the room, and then it just sounds right.

Replaced a pair of Q Acoustics bookshelves and a small amp that had been doing telly duty for years. In pure hi-fi terms the bookshelves were better with music, no question, and I will not pretend otherwise. What the bar wins on is everything else. One lead to the telly, one to the wall, no amp humming away on the shelf, and the volume follows the TV remote. For films it is not close, the Sennheiser has a floor and a ceiling the bookshelves never had. Music is the compromise you make.

Small enough to sit in front of a 55in set without blocking the IR window, which ruled out three other bars on my list. It is 70cm end to end and about as deep as a paperback. The virtualisation is clever, genuinely wide for something with no rear speakers, though it falls apart if you sit off to one side. Straight on the sofa it is convincing. Setup was ten minutes including the app calibration.

We put this on the wall under a 65in panel in an open-plan kitchen diner, and the thing I did not expect was how well it copes with a room that has no back wall to bounce off. Voices stay pinned to the screen even when I am at the hob eight feet away. Ten months in and the only change has been switching the AMBEO setting from maximum to standard, because on full it pushes the effects a bit far for everyday telly. For films it goes back up. The bracket was in the box, which saved a trip to the shops.

Two weeks of ownership and I have already stopped reaching for the subtitle button on iPlayer dramas, which was the entire reason for buying it. The dialogue enhancement is not a gimmick, it lifts speech out of the mix without making everything sound thin and boxy the way the telly speakers did on their so-called clear voice mode. Wall mounting took one bracket and two rawlplugs. Genuinely pleased with this one!

The app is where this lives, not the remote. Source switching, the AMBEO setting, night mode and the dialogue slider are all in there and the little remote does about a fifth of it. Nine months in I have accepted that my phone is the volume control, which is fine until someone else wants to turn it down.

Three stars, and it pains me because the sound when it behaves is remarkable for a bar this size. The problem is the handshake. My TV is a 2019 Samsung and the eARC link drops every few days, at which point the bar sits there with a blue light and no audio until both boxes are power cycled. I have been through three HDMI leads and turned off every CEC setting I can find, and it still happens. The forums blame the telly, the telly forums blame the bar. Seven weeks in, my workaround is a plug-in timer that cuts the mains to both overnight so the handshake starts fresh each morning, which is not what you expect at this money. When it behaves, the dialogue clarity and the sense of height are excellent, however, and it would be five stars if it simply stayed connected.
