Three stars because the height channels never convinced me. The bar does a wide, clean front stage and the sub is genuinely good, but the True X name promises something from above and in a room with a sloped ceiling there is nothing up there at all. Yamaha would say that is the room, and they would be right, which is rather the point: check your ceiling before you pay for the effect. As a 3.1 with a good sub it is a fine bar.

A fortnight in and the party wall test has been passed. Sub sits on a slab of carpet underlay in the corner, level backed off two notches, and the neighbour who used to hear the old subwoofer through the chimney breast has said nothing. Dialogue in drama is clear at a volume that would previously have been mumbling. Delighted with it!

The bar itself is fine. The problem is where it has to sit. Ours is 65cm long and only 6cm tall, and it still lands right across the IR window on the bottom edge of the telly, so the TV remote works from a standing position and nowhere else. There is a plastic stand in the box that raises it, which then puts it over the screen.

This went in to replace a five-speaker setup that had been in the loft since we moved, and I have not regretted losing the cable runs. The external sub is the part that makes it work, a proper wireless box you can shove behind a chair rather than a slim thing pretending to have bass. The reason it is four is the remote. It is small, black, unlit, and the buttons are all the same shape, so in a dark room you are pressing by memory. A year in I know where night mode is by feel, but nobody visiting ever does. The app is better, though it wants the phone unlocked every time.
