Half a year of trying to make this the only device I carry, and three stars is where I have honestly landed. The good is very good. The cellular means it is online on a hillside if it has to be, the screen is the best thing in the house, and the pencil has made me sketch again after twenty years of not. The less good is everything around the edges. Two apps at a time is the ceiling before it starts closing things behind you, a mouse is still an afterthought, and connecting anything by cable is a lottery. Battery has also slipped over the months, from a comfortable working day to needing a top-up by mid-afternoon if the screen is bright. Superb tablet, still not the laptop the price implies.

Two thousand miles of driving holiday tested this properly, so here is the report. In the passenger seat it did the navigating and the hotel booking on its own data, which is the entire argument for paying more for the cellular one. In the evenings it was the film, and the children fought over it. Reading on it one-handed is comfortable for a chapter at this size, which is not true of the thirteen inch. The pencil came out for a sketch of the harbour and behaved like a pencil rather than a gadget. Back at work it plugs into the monitor and becomes a second screen. A terabyte has not needed thinking about once!

It lives in the car now and comes out at every job, which is why the cellular version was worth the extra. Photographs of the work go up to the office before I have left the drive, the client signs on the screen with the pencil, and the paperwork is done. A terabyte is far more than the job needs, but the smaller one would have been full inside a year!
