The missing two stars are about what this is not, rather than what it is. As a screen it is the best thing in the house. Films, drawing, reading a score at full size on a music stand, all superb. As the machine that was meant to take over from a laptop for a masters, it has not. The referencing software does not exist for it, two windows is the ceiling, and getting a folder of PDFs into a sensible order takes longer than it does on any computer I have used. And because I saved money on the Wi-Fi version, every library day starts with a fight with a captive portal. Thirteen inches without a SIM is an odd combination in hindsight.

My father has arthritis and the size of this was the whole point: everything is bigger, the buttons in the apps are bigger, and he can read the paper on it without his glasses on. It lives on a stand on the kitchen table and gets used for the news, the crossword and video calls with the grandchildren. Charging once every three days is about right for that. Best thing we have bought him in years!

Wi-Fi only was a deliberate saving, since it lives between the studio and the kitchen and has never once been anywhere without a network. What it is for is drawing. A full sketch scaled down, layers, no lag, and the pencil is close enough to a real one that my students cannot tell in the finished work. A terabyte holds the lot without a cloud subscription, which after years of paying monthly for storage feels like getting something back!

The thirteen inch screen is what makes two documents side by side genuinely readable rather than technically possible, and it is why this went into the bag instead of the smaller one. It has already done a conference: notes in one window, the programme in the other, and the battery went from breakfast to the last session with room to spare, though the bag is heavier than it was.
