The brightness here is useful rather than a number on a box: a kitchen-diner with two skylights and the picture never looks washed out at any point in the day. In dark films the white subtitles carry a faint glow with them, which is the price of a backlight and hard to unsee once noticed. 2 months in it has not stopped us watching anything, but it is the reason this is four rather than five.

The novelty wore off inside a year and the irritations did not. Apps close themselves when you switch inputs, so coming back from the console means loading everything again from cold, and the home screen has picked up two extra rows of promoted rubbish since we bought it. Sound has always been poor, and the last update made the volume steps uneven, so one level is too quiet and the next is loud enough to wake the baby. The picture is fine. Everything you have to touch on the way to the picture is not. For the money it should not be this much of a chore.

Our room is not big and every piece of advice online said we would regret this size. We do not. Sat about 2.5 metres back, films fill the wall the way they are supposed to and nobody has complained of a stiff neck yet. The feet were never an option, since the unit is nowhere near wide enough, so it went straight onto a bracket, which also solved where to hide the cables. Find someone to help you lift it, it is unwieldy rather than heavy

We came from a set half this size and the first evening was ridiculous, everyone sat too close and nobody able to take it in. 3 days later it feels perfectly normal, which says something about how quickly the eye adjusts. Out of the box it needed nothing beyond turning the shop mode off, though the smoothing went with it.

Plugged the console in expecting the usual telly compromise and got something that keeps up instead. Fast panning in a shooter stays clean and the delay in game mode is low enough that I stopped thinking about it after the first evening. The feet are the catch. They sit almost at the outer corners, so the old sideboard was hopeless and a wider one had to be found before the thing could come out of its box!

Game mode switches itself over when the console wakes and the response is immediate. Racing games feel exactly as they do on the monitor upstairs, which is not what I expected from a telly this big!

Three stars is a reluctant score for something with a picture this good, and it is entirely down to everything around the panel. The set boots into a home screen that wants to sell me a film before it will show me the app I opened it for. Scrolling that screen is not smooth. The remote drops its pointer if you leave it alone and needs a shake to wake up. Then there is the sound. On its own it is thin and boxy, and in anything with a score under the dialogue you find yourself reaching for the subtitles. A set this thin cannot hold a decent speaker, I know that, but the gap between this and the old plasma it replaced is not a small one. The picture, to be fair, is superb. Bright, sharp and clean on motion once the smoothing is off. If the software were half as good this would be five stars without hesitating.

The picture was excellent from the first evening, so it was a shock to come down one morning and find it flat and cold. An hour went by with me convinced the panel had failed before I worked out that an overnight update had reset the picture mode and turned the energy saving back on. Put back the way I had it, all was well again, and 18 months in it has only happened the once. What annoys me is that nothing tells you it has happened: no note, no prompt, just a different telly in the morning. The rest of the time it does everything asked of it, bright enough for a sunny room, quick to wake, sport clean with the smoothing on its lowest notch. Write your settings down before you go to bed.

It took two people, a stud finder and a good deal of swearing, but it is on the wall now and the room is a different room. Everybody who comes in says something about it before they say hello!
