Two stars and it is entirely about the noise. In an edit suite you can hear everything, and this sits under the desk making a low rattle that comes and goes with the fan curve. It is not the volume so much as the character of it, because a steady hum I could live with and this one warbles. Six weeks of trying to ignore it and I have taken to working in headphones, which rather defeats the point of having a treated room.

It took two of us to get it up to the first-floor suite and I would not want to repeat the exercise in a hurry. Once it was under the desk, though, the first job on it was a two-hour multicam that the old machine used to choke on, and it played back at full resolution with noise reduction on. No proxies, no waiting for a render before a client can look at anything. Whether it stays this composed in August is the open question, but so far it has been a revelation.

The memory is why we paid for a proper workstation instead of a fast desktop with a big graphics card in it. Long overnight renders used to fall over around the eight-hour mark and nobody could ever say why. Since this arrived, not one failed job.
