Came without an OS, which is exactly right for a machine that has to match a very particular software stack. Built it the way the application vendor wants, pinned the driver, and it has not wavered since. Sustained load is where it earns the money: eight hours of solving and the clocks at the end match the clocks at the start, in a room that gets warm in the afternoon!

Four months of continuous batch work and the fan curve has been the surprise. At idle it is genuinely inaudible; under full load it rises once and then holds there, no hunting up and down, which in a room with four people in it matters more than the absolute level. The one design choice I would query is the front panel ports, which sit under a flap that catches on the desk edge if the machine is anywhere near flush. Small thing on an otherwise beautifully made box.

Three stars, and the machine itself is not really the problem. Under load it is superb and it is quieter than anything this size has a right to be. What has cost it is the storage arrangement. One terabyte in a chassis with this many empty bays is a strange way to ship a workstation, and our project files filled it in three weeks. Adding drives was easy enough, but I resent starting a machine at this level with a shopping list.

The reason it was chosen over a cheaper tower was the memory ceiling, and it has already paid for itself on one job where the whole dataset had to be resident. What I did not expect was how little noise it makes doing it.

Early days and I am holding at three stars until the driver question is settled. Raw speed is not in doubt — the first test job came back in a third of the time the old machine took — but our application refuses to certify against what shipped on the card, and the version it does want is not straightforward to get in place. The hardware itself is a pleasure. Tool-free everywhere, sensible airflow, quiet at idle in a room where four people sit. If the software side settles I will happily come back and change this.
