Two documents genuinely fit side by side at full size
The charger and the machine together are a proper load
The 18 inch panel is the whole reason for buying this and it delivers exactly what I hoped. Two A4 documents at full size side by side, no scrolling, no zooming, and after a decade of squinting at 14 inch screens that alone justifies it. Build is sober and sensible in the way work machines used to be. Nothing flashes, nothing glows, the hinge is firm, and the keyboard has enough travel to type on all day without my wrists complaining. The weight is the honest downside. It goes to the office once a week and by the time the charger and a folder are in the bag it is a serious carry. On the desk, where it spends the rest of its life, it is superb!
Used for: More than a year
Not slowed down in the slightest
It has never once left the desk
It has done full working days for over a year without a single restart, which the last machine could not manage in a week

Docks over one cable and everything comes up
Speakers are quiet for a machine this size
Replaced a tower and two monitors with this and a single dock, and the desk is unrecognisable! One cable in the morning and the keyboard, the network, the printer and an external drive all appear without any of the negotiating the old setup needed. The screen is big enough that I have not missed the second monitor at all, and the numeric pad has made a difference I did not anticipate. Speakers are the weak spot, quiet and flat, but on a work machine that has never mattered to me.

An 18 inch panel and a numeric keypad, finally
The Ultra 7 is the sensible chip, not the fast one
Bought for accounts work where the screen size matters more than raw speed, and the choice of the Ultra 7 over the 9 has cost nothing anyone would detect. Spreadsheets that ran to a thousand rows on the old machine now fit on screen without scrolling, which sounds trivial and saves the better part of an hour every week. It is a large object. The bag it came with is really a suitcase and it lives on the desk, but it was never bought to travel. Battery is fine for a meeting and not for a day, which was expected.

Quiet even when it is working hard
You need the desk depth for a machine this size
Straight replacement for an ageing desktop and the only sound in the room now is the clock. It gets warm above the keyboard under load and the palm rest stays cool, which is the right way round
Used for: 3–6 months
Handles everything the job needs without fuss
The webcam is soft and the microphone picks up the room
The machine itself has been completely faultless. Where it lets itself down, four months in, is on calls, since the camera is noticeably soft compared to a phone and the microphone seems to prefer the sound of the office to my voice. A separate headset has fixed half of that
Used for: 1–3 months
Every port is on the machine, no adapters needed
The thing that decided it against the thinner alternatives was the port selection. Full size HDMI, Ethernet, a card reader and enough USB that the dongle pouch has been retired, which for anyone who visits client sites is worth more than 300 grams saved. Speed is more than adequate for what I do, and the fans stay out of the way unless something big is exporting.
