Upgraded after four years on a phone that had started to feel its age, and I wrote most of this to answer the questions I had before ordering. Battery: out at seven, home at seven, mail and messages all day, an hour of podcasts and about half an hour of maps, and it is at forty per cent when I put it down. On the plug it goes back up quicker than anything I have owned, so a wash and a shave is enough to get you out the door. Camera: daylight is beyond argument. In a dim pub it keeps skin looking like skin and the background looking like a pub, where the old one turned everybody orange. Screen: readable on the beach in August with sunglasses on, which was the deciding test. The grumble is the weight. It is a two-handed phone, no way round it.

Three stars for now and I hope to raise it. Out of the box the thing would not hold on to the office wifi and dropped to one bar of signal in a building where my old phone had three, which for a device at this money is not what I expected. Everything else, screen, camera, speed, is beyond reproach.

Bought it as the family camera as much as a phone, and that is how it has been used: two holidays, a wedding, a christening and about four thousand photographs of a dog. Daylight and dusk are both excellent. Indoors under yellow light it is very good but not magic, and if somebody moves you will get a smeared arm the same as on any phone. The zoom has replaced the compact camera that used to come away with us, which I did not expect at all. The reason it is four stars rather than five is the update situation, oddly. Not that it will stop, but that each one seems to take a bite out of the battery for a fortnight before it settles, and at this age of phone that is starting to show.

The orange is either the best or the worst thing about it depending who you ask in this house. In person it is a burnt copper rather than the traffic cone the pictures suggest, and it is the first phone I have not immediately hidden inside a case, though I have had to explain it in every meeting since.

Work handset, so the test is a long day out of the office rather than anything clever. Leaving at half six, tethering a laptop on the train, a full morning of calls, maps around an unfamiliar town in the afternoon and photographs of everything I look at: it comes back with enough left to get through the evening. Heat has been the other pleasant surprise. Tethering used to turn my old phone into a hand warmer and this one barely notices, even in a car cradle with the sun on it. The only thing I would change is the weight in a shirt pocket, which is a small price for what it does.
