The AI upscaling is better than I expected on old material. Standard definition catch-up television still looks like standard definition, obviously, but 1080p streams are cleaned up nicely without the smeared, waxy look that processing on my last set gave faces. Five months in, it is the thing I did not expect to care about.

This lives in a room I set up specifically for watching films, and it has been worth every bit of the planning. Start with the blacks, because that is what you are paying for. In a properly dark room the letterbox bars disappear into the frame and a night scene has actual shadow detail rather than a lifted grey murk. No blooming around subtitles, no haloing around a torch in a dark corridor, because each pixel simply switches off. Brightness on this generation is much better than the OLED I had before. Specular highlights, sunlight on water, that kind of thing, genuinely punch now. Full screen bright scenes are still dimmer than a Mini LED set, and if your room has windows behind the seating you would be better served elsewhere. Processing is excellent, old broadcast content is cleaned up without looking waxy, and 165Hz gaming is a bonus I did not expect to use. Ten months in the room and none of that has changed.

This has quietly replaced going to the cinema for us. The set-up took an evening. Filmmaker mode for films, a separate custom preset for sport with the motion handling lowered rather than off, and game optimiser picks itself up automatically when the console wakes. LG have made the picture presets easy to live with even if the rest of the interface is busy. Two months on, nothing in that set-up has needed revisiting. Picture quality needs no defending: per-pixel contrast, colour that stays saturated at low brightness, and no clouding or banding on a dark grey fade. The one thing I would warn about is weight distribution. The panel is thin and the electronics sit low, so it needs a solid unit and careful handling.

The picture in a dark room is everything you would want from an OLED at this size. My problem is the room I actually have. With the afternoon sun on it the screen goes grey and reflective and there is nothing in the menus that fixes it. Superb television, wrong technology for a bright south-facing lounge.

Bought after a long argument with myself about the money, and I stopped regretting it about ten minutes after the first film. The size is the first thing. 83 inches from three and a half metres fills your vision in a way a 65 inch set never does, and because it is OLED there is no bezel glow or backlight structure to remind you that you are looking at a panel. The second is what it does with dark material. I put on a film I have seen twenty times and saw detail in the night scenes I did not know was there. Not brightened, not lifted, just visible. The third is that it has been completely reliable through nine months of heavy use, with the panel care routines running overnight and no sign of retention on the news channel logo I leave on most mornings.
