Dark films are the reason to spend this much. Detail sits in the shadows where the old set simply painted everything black, and a fortnight in I keep putting on things I have already seen just to look at them again. The speakers are the let-down. Voices are clear on their own, but the moment music comes in underneath they are swamped, and no amount of poking about in the sound modes brings them back. The home screen insists on showing me films I have no interest in before it shows me the app I opened it for. Four stars, and the missing one has nothing to do with the panel.

This replaced a set that had done ten years and I had every intention of keeping it just as long. 15 months of daily use so far and the panel is exactly as it was: no mark from a news channel logo, no drift in the colour, nothing at all. The software is the part that has gone backwards. It was quick when we got it and now there is a beat between pressing a button and anything happening, and the home screen has grown a row of sponsored films that was not there at the start. None of it can be removed, only ignored. Sound, as with all of these, is thin. We knew that going in and there is a bar underneath. If you are choosing between this and something brighter for a sunny room, be honest about your curtains, because this is at its best with the lights off.

Went on a slim bracket and there is barely a finger's width behind it, which is exactly why this model was chosen. The remote, though, is the only thing I would change: leave it alone for a bit and the pointer has nodded off

The room this went in has one small window and the curtains are usually shut, which is apparently the ideal home for one of these. Films look like the cinema, with no glow around the subtitles at all. 4 months in and I have changed precisely one setting since the first evening!

Five stars for what it does at night, with a warning about the rest of the day. This is a mirror when the room is bright: the window sits in the middle of the picture from about 3 in the afternoon and the only fix is a curtain across it. The speakers are not up to the panel either. On the news they are fine, in a film with any score at all the dialogue goes under and the subtitles end up on. Neither of those stops me recommending it, because with the lights off nothing else at the price does what this does.

Sport was the reason for the upgrade and it delivers: the grass does not shimmer, the ball does not smear and the smoothing goes off in one place rather than mode by mode. 8 months on, though, the menus take noticeably longer to open than they did, which is a strange thing to get worse.

Our front room is nothing special in size and the advice everywhere was that 77 inches would be too much for it. Sat two and a half metres back it is exactly right, and that argument is now settled. Out of the box the shop mode was doing its usual trick, over-sharpening everything and making faces look waxy. Two minutes in the menu, film preset, smoothing off, and it has been left alone since. Football on a Saturday is the real test and it passes: the pan across the pitch holds together and nobody in this house has used the words soap opera once. The only warning is the weight of the panel while you are lining a bracket up on your own. Do not!

The console picked the high refresh mode on its own and there is nothing at all between pressing a button and the thing happening. After a set that felt like wading, it is a different sport altogether. Daytime is the one compromise, though: with sun on the window the picture wants the curtains half drawn!
